Maid of Honor dresses are truly legendary and usually for not the best of reasons. Maid of Honor dresses and bridesmaid dresses have been the subject of jokes, comedy skits and ridicule. The truth is, however, in recent years Maid of Honor dresses and bridesmaid dresses have become more fashionable and stylish.

Typically, the dress that the Maid of Honor wears is similar but different than the dresses worn by the bridesmaids. The style of the dress may be identical but the color different, or the color identical but the style different, that will depend on what the Bride likes.

As the Maid of Honor or Matron of Honor you have every right and even the responsibility to discuss the dresses to be worn with the Bride. Consider the ages and body types of all the bridesmaids, as well as hair color and skin color. If a particular dress may leave half the bridal party looking washed out because of their coloring you can mention it to the Bride. The Bride will make the final decision, however, you should do your due diligence in pointing things like this out to her.

The Maid of Honor dress is paid for by the Maid of Honor and the bridesmaids typically pay for their own dresses as well. If you are aware that a bridesmaid is having difficulty paying for her dress you can discuss the issue with the bridesmaid and separately with the Bride to determine how to handle the issue.

The Maid of Honor should also make sure everyone goes for their fittings on time. The last thing anyone wants to hear is that one of the bridesmaids' dresses does not fit and cannot be altered in time. One of the duties of the Maid of Honor is to stay on top of this.

As the Maid of Honor or Matron of Honor it is your responsibility to make sure everyone in the bridal party is aware of their obligations and timelines for dress fittings, picking up their dresses, where to buy shoes that match and other accessories and so forth.

The Maid of Honor dresses need not be a joke - they can be beautiful and elegant, or sexy and sassy all depending on the desires of the Bride. As Maid of Honor you should chime in and help the Bride pick the right dresses for her bridal party.
